Update from the President

Headshot of Gloria Niles

After a challenging year, we are entering 2021 with hope on the horizon. My motto for 2021 is “from pivot to purpose” as we reflect on the lessons learned, skills gained, and positive outcomes that have arisen from the challenges we all faced in 2020. Acknowledging that ongoing challenges with reduced budgets, and continued concerns for health and safety are threats and concerns, together, as members of Hawaiʻi CEC, we will focus on our purpose.

With challenges come opportunities. CEC Live, provides a virutal opportunity to engage, interact and be inspired. Hawaiʻi CEC is also focused on building connections across our islands. We welcome Hawaiʻi CEC member representatives from across the islands to join the Hawaiʻi CEC executive committee to strengthen or network of support. Connecting at the local and state level in CEC is an excellent opportunity to meet new colleagues and friends, and can lead to new leadership opportunities at the state, national and international level with CEC.

CECʻs policy agenda focuses on protecting and supporting the core principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004. Hawaiʻi CEC is seeking new leaders who are interested in policy and advocacy to serve as the CAN Coordinator and Hawaiʻi CEC Policy and Advocacy Committee. With a new administration entering the US Department of Education, the Hawaiʻi CEC CAN Coordinator will be a liaison for Hawaiʻi CEC as we collectively advocate with purpose at the local, state and federal level to protect and expand policies and programs that support students with exceptionalities.

Mahalo nui loa for your commitment to serving our keiki. Make a commitment today to engage with Hawaiʻi CEC. There are so many opportunities, we can certainly find a role that fits your unique purpose. No matter how large or how small of a commitment you can make at this time, your purpose and talents will help Hawaiʻi CEC and Special Education move from our 2020 pivot to into our purpose. Please stay in touch and let us know how you wish to contribute to Hawaiʻi CECʻs purpose.
